Building Conversations: Michael Lee and Nadiah Bamadhaj

15 Sep 2006 – 25 Feb 2007

Building Conversations is an attempt at inscribing a sense of criticality in the thinking of architecture and the histories that surround it. The contemporary art practices of the artists Michael Lee and Nadiah Bamadhaj engage the vernacular of architecture by cross-referencing heritage with history, present politics with future ruin.

Nadiah Bamadhaj’s work have been for the most part overlined by a political skin, but her recent projects and concerns are finding new directions. Architecture has been prominent, with her morphing of unlikely architectural types in even more unlikely settings. Her works have a beautiful subtlety that may be lost to the un-keen observer, but a delight of discovery for those who take the time.

Michael Lee’s practice has also been marked by thoughts of morphing; in his case however, the problematic is more architecturally grounded—the continuance of the body with the building. He has made explorations of buildings and their relation to the human form, how we transgress or relate to the spaces that envelop us. His works are minimal but brimming with the rigor of craftsmanship and preciseness rarely seen in art practices today.

24 Aug 2007 – 31 Oct 2007

Come witness the effects of one of Singapore's darkest movements in history - the Malayan Emergency (1948-1960) - on the local arts scene. This tumultuous period saw a series of social and political upheavels such as the Maria Hertogh Riots (1950), the  Anti-Yellow Culture Movement in the early 1950s and the Hock Lee Bus Strikes (1955). This exhibition challenges audiences to ponder why particular artistic directions, genres and subject matter were adopted by artists during this period, and raises the question of whether socio-political events shape art-making and artistic activities.
