2005 DAEJEON FAST: Future of Art, Science and Technology
Digital Paradise : Daejeon Museum of Art, Korea
Urbanity - 4 Takes : Yuseong Culture and Arts Centre, Daejeon, Korea
8th-15th November 2005
Curated by Singapore Art Museum
Since the establishment of Daejeok Science Town in 1973, Daejeon is home to major research and development centres and educational institutions. Daejeon Art Museum has initiated Daejeon FAST to be held periodically to promote technology art. Singapore's participation is curated and organised by the Singapore Art Museum.
Presented within Digital Paradise , " Free Network Visible Network " , employs various processes to enable viewers to visualise interchanged information between users of a network. These virtual representations come in various colours, shapes and sizes according to the characteristics of the information that is being circulated. The work is created by artists Clara Boj and Diego Diaz in collaboration with Dr Adrian Cheok, director of Interaction and Entertainment Research Center, Nanyang Technological University with researchers Liu Wei and Xu Ke.
The work questions the usage of space – seen, unseen and imagined. With everyday access to the net, how do we each contribute to the urban landscape inadvertently? More importantly, how do we ‘see’ our ‘ invisible ‘ intrusions in our urban spaces? Where do the digital and physical public spaces exist and how are they demarcated? This visibility is provided by augmented reality technology.
In Urbanity- 4 Takes , work by artists Heman Chong ,Tan Kai Syng, Michael Tan and Ann Shen Guojun individually give voice to urban phenomena. They refer to the alienating conditions of everyday life as well as the evolution of anti-paradise and soul-destroying, meaningless, exploitative and sometimes violent aspects of urban lifestyles with its multitude of unanswered questions.
