JOURNEYS: A Special Preview of Works by Liu Kang Singapore Preview: 18 October 2000 - 27 October 2000, MITA Building (Artrium) Beijing: 7 - 27 November 2000, China Art Gallery Shanghai: 6 -20 January 2001, Liu Hai Su Art Museum
A travelling exhibition of over 45 works by Singapore's pioneer artist Liu Kang begins its tour route at the MITA ARtrium, and proceeds to Beijing and Shanghai in the following months. A tribute to the artist's long and outstanding artistic life, this exhibition presents key works from every notable period in his career. Highlights include early paintings executed in Paris of the 1930s, to pivotal works that emerged from his extensive travels and personal encounters. Organized by the National Arts Council and Singapore Art Museum (National Heritage Board), and the China International Exhibition Agency under the aegis of the China-Singapore Executive Programme, this art touring event also marks the 10th year celebration of diplomatic relations between Singapore and the PRC.

Original or Copy: How to Authenticate Chinese Paintings 18 February 2000- 28 May 2000
The exhibition presented authentic and "fake" scrolls of traditional Chinese paintings from the Ming Dynasty to the present. The "fake" is something very peculiar to the Chinese history of art, as copying works of masters have always been encouraged and approved as a means of learning.

The Rose Crossing: Contemporary Art in Australia 10 February 2000- 2 April 2000
The Rose Crossing was an exhibition of contemporary Australian art borne of difference. Paintings and installations bore witness to a set of political decisions and social phenomena that have transformed rethinking of Australia as a new country; in fact, a culture made up of ancient cultures, both indigenous and imported. Co-organized by the Singapore Art Museum and Sherman Galleries, Sydney. |

Unmasking Vollard: His Legacy of the Avant Garde from the Leon Dierx Museum 13 January 2000- 26 March 2000
This was the collection of avant garde works by the foremost Parisian art dealer of the 20th century, Ambroise Vollard (1866-1939). He was noted for the early recognition and sponsorship of leading artists such as Cezanne, Matisse, Renoir and Picasso. The exhibition consisted of sculptures, paintings, drawings and masks by 63 great modern masters including Renoir, Picasso, Degas, Gauguin, Chagall and Rouault. The collection was taken from the the Leon Dieurx Museum in the French Reunion Island, and provided a vivid insight into the development of the avant-garde artistic creation in the West from the end of the nineteenth century to the beginning of the twentieth. |

Nokia Singapore Art 1999 2 December 1999- 21 January 2000
Jointly organised by the Singapore Art Museum and the National Arts Council, Nokia Singapore Art 2000 was an national arts event in nine different locations, including the Museum. Included were a Curated Section, Awardee Section, an Open Section, an Asia-Pacific Arts Awards Section, and Affiliate Exhibitions involving private galleries and artist groups. They present critical aspects of contemporary practices in Singapore, putting together works by important practitioners of the 1990s. |
