Gao Xingjian Experience

17 November 2005 - 7 February 2006

SAM Galleries 1.5 & 2.5

Curator: Patricia Ong

Featuring 60 ink works with 10 new works to be unveiled, Gao Xingjian Experience is the first retrospective exhibition by the Nobel Prize Laureate in Asia.

An acclaimed novelist and playwright, the literary award winner is also well known for his ink paintings. As a writer-painter, Gao Xingjian takes hold of his artistic practice with a freedom that espouses neither any forms of attachments nor inhibitions. Referring to the renderings of the ink works as another mode of expression to his other literary output, Gao emphasizes on the contemplation of the inner vision as the crux of painting.

Born in China in 1940, Gao is currently residing in Paris. He has held about 30 world-wide exhibitions spanning Asia, Europe and the United States.

In conjunction with the exhibition, an international forum will be held on 20 November featuring eminent international guest speakers including Dr QUAH Sy Ren of Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), Dr Gilbert FONG of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong), Dr Mabel LEE of University of Sydney (Australia), Dr Noël DUTRAIT of University of Provence (France), and Prof CHEN Lusheng of Central Academy of Fine Arts and National Art Museum of China (China). The forum seeks to explore and disseminate various issues within Gao Xingjian's literary, visual and theatre works.
